A fingerprint reader is one of the innovative consumer printed electronics devices that has validated MADRAS’ technology approach, based on applying advanced materials and soft fabrication techniques.
The reader, that has been developed to be integrated into Cooltra shared scooters, enables to activate them through the user’s fingerprint recognition in connection with telematics and a back-end interface.
Common fingerprint readers are inorganic, mainly made of silicon rigid substrates and evaporated materials.
This device, on the other hand, is made up by a photodetecting fully printed frontplane based on advanced materials and in-mould electronics manufacturing processes.
The reader is capable to scan and identify users’ fingerprints thanks to an optical imaging component, activating, through telematics and a back-end interface, the shared scooters.
The device combines an oxide-based thin-film transistor backplane with a fully printed organic photodiode frontplane topped by a transparent thin-film encapsulation and hardcoat layer.
Additional biometric data, such as heart rate, can be extracted by digitally treating the images collected with the photosensors, thus providing a second order of security.
This device mitigates, on one hand, the usurpation or falsification of user’s identity when using a shared scooter and, on the other hand, all the risks and costs that this entails.
The reader is able to work under harsh environmental conditions, since Cooltra’s scooters are available outdoors 24/7.
This reader pioneers its integration to different fields where individuals need to be recognised, such the shared mobility, healthcare and banking sectors.
